Giraffe at Pa. zoo picks his own name

ERIE, Pa. (AP) - October 19, 2011

Meet Nigel, a 1-year-old animal who stands about 10 feet tall.

Officials at the Erie Zoo received about 6,000 submissions in a naming contest that had only one rule: Anything but Fluffy.

After narrowing the suggestions to four finalists, zookeepers wrote down the names and covered them with alfalfa. Then they let the animal decide which pile to eat.

According to the Erie Times-News, the giraffe kicked at one pile and sniffed at another before eating some off the Nigel pile.

The other finalists were Murphy and two African names: Runako, meaning "handsome," and Zuri, meaning "good looking."

Nigel arrived in July from the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minn.
