Icy conditions blamed for area crashes

CENTER CITY - January 5, 2012

Commuters in South Philadelphia woke up to ice on the roadways and snow on their windshields.

Nine cars were involved in a wreck on I-95 Wednesday night. It happened near the split with I-676 in Center City. A police cruiser was one of the vehicles in the pileup. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.

In Delaware, a car ended up upside down in a pond. It happened along Route 273 at Red Mill Road in Newark around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday. The driver had to be pulled from the car, but is expected to be OK.

In another part of Newark, seven people were hurt in a one vehicle crash. Investigators say the driver of a pickup truck lost control, veered off the road and crashed.

It happened on the southbound side of I-95 around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. No one was seriously hurt.
