The incident happened Friday evening in a home on Rodney Drive in the Edgemoor Gardens community of Wilmington.
Authorities say Dwayne Evans was at the home with his uncle – 62-year-old Robert Collins – when an altercation broke out between the two.
The disagreement turned physical with Evans allegedly throwing a punch. Shortly after, police say Evans armed himself with a gun and a knife and moments later stabbed Collins.
When officers arrived, they found the victim with a stab wound to his upper body. Collins was taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.
Investigators later learned that Evans was taken by private vehicle to Wilmington Hospital for injuries sustained during the altercation.
Police arrived at the hospital and took him into custody without incident.
Evans faces 1st degree murder and weapons possession charges and is being held without bail.
