MARINA DEL REY -- A Los Angeles city councilman on Wednesday insisted the city did not issue any permits for a full-scale fireworks show that erupted around midnight off the coast of Marina del Rey, apparently as part of a birthday party thrown by Khloe Kardashian.
The midnight fireworks display, however, came as a loud wake-up call for thousands of people in and around Marina del Rey.
ABC7 reporter Elex Michaelson, who witnessed the display, said it was bigger than most 4th of July shows. He called it a "full scale production".
City Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents the incorporated areas of the marina, expressed outrage on Twitter and included "#stupidrude" for emphasis.
According to US Weekly, the celebration was a 26th birthday bash for Kardashian's boyfriend, NBA star James Harden, and was held aboard the Fantasea Yacht. Among the 200 guests were Kim Kardashian and husband Kanye West, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Kris Jenner and NBA players Trevor Ariza and Baron Davis, US Weekly reported.
Los Angeles County sheriff's officials says the fireworks show went through the "appropriate U.S. Coast Guard review process" and that Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were notified.
LASD officials added that the department does not have jurisdiction to issue permits for the fireworks, because they took place about 100 feet west of the breakwater of Marina del Rey.
