LEVITTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- Residents of a Levittown, Bucks County apartment complex were evacuated after crews detected a strong gas odor.

It all began late Sunday morning at the Chesterfield Apartments in the 1300 block of Veterans Highway.

While PECO workers were there, they noticed a strong gas odor.

Around noon, crews decided to shut down the gas and electricity to all five buildings.

There are 12 units in each building.

Nearly 200 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

PECO officials say they cannot estimate when service will be restored.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Harry Truman High School on Green Lane to help displaced residents.
