Two pedestrians were struck and killed on the New Jersey Turnpike in a crash involving an apparent police vehicle.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (WPVI) -- Two pedestrians were struck and killed on the New Jersey Turnpike in a crash involving an apparent police vehicle.

The accident happened Wednesday around 1:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes in Secaucus, approaching the Vince Lombardi service area.

A police vehicle with a smashed front window and front-end damage was parked on the Turnpike at the crash scene.

It was not clear which police department's vehicle was involved.

The turnpike's northbound Eastern Spur was closed for the accident investigation but started to reopen just before 5 a.m. Traffic was backed up for miles, with many vehicles stopped for hours.

The names of the victims have not been released.
