Shelter Me: Voorhees Animal Orphanage.
VOORHEES, N.J. (WPVI) -- A small but mighty rescue in South Jersey keeps hundreds of animals off the streets.
Providing not only care, but compassion. But now, they are looking for a new home.
The Voorhees Animal Orphanage saves thousands of animal lives each year.
They operate as an adoption center and the main rescue for 17 municipalities in Camden County.
"We're very fortunate we've got a lot of play yards we're able to get the dogs outside and get them exercise," says Voorhees Animal Orphanage Marketing Director Jennifer Bailey.
The committed staff and volunteers work around the clock to care for the hundreds of animals they house and foster.
"We're saving lives on a shoestring budget, in a duct-taped building. A new building would be much more efficient," Bailey says.
The orphanage is raising money to rebuild a new shelter that will modernize their facility in time for their 30th anniversary.
"We could probably double the amount of lives we save," says Bailey.
Lives similar to Obie, who came from Puerto Rico a few weeks ago as a result of Hurricane Maria. Obie is a senior, who recently tested positive for heart worm.
"He's lucky he's with us because we'll be treating him," Bailey says.
Jeffie is a 3-year-old puppy who was rescued from a high kill shelter in the south.
"He always had a funny thing with his spine and back legs but he doesn't let it seem to stop him," says volunteer Jill McCrudden.
He's also been receiving water therapy for an ACL injury.
"He loves his walks and he loves playing with toys," McCrudden says.
Curly is a senior dog who was living with an elderly owner before he passed away.
"He needs to get out of here, a shelter is no place for a senior dog," says Bailey.
Two-year-old Pandora was rescued from a high kill shelter in Tennessee. She has a litter of puppies, who will also be available for adoption soon.
