Domestic dispute turns deadly outside senior apartment complex in Southwest Philly

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police said a domestic dispute turned deadly on Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives placed evidence markers on the long trail of blood outside a senior apartment complex in Southwest Philadelphia.

"This is a quiet area, all elderly. You never expect it," said Nanette Turner from Clifton Heights.

Turner said the unthinkable happened at a home for independent seniors on the 7100 block of Brant Place.

Turner was caring for a resident when she suddenly heard loud noises in a different unit. She said she was concerned, so she knocked on the door.

"Just heard a whole bunch of commotion," said Turner. "The man came to the door, and he had blood all over him, like everywhere -- on his hands and everything. I was like, 'Are you alright?' And he's like, 'It's OK. It's OK.' And I said, 'No, it's not,' and I called the cops."

Police sources tell Action News the 76-year-old resident and a 69-year-old man were in a physical altercation that escalated to the men stabbing each other.

"You would never think this with seniors," said Turner. "You would never think it."

When officers arrived at the scene around 3:15 p.m., sources said the resident jumped out of the second-floor window and tried to run away, leaving behind a line of blood and his shoe.

Police said the 69-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the 76-year-old resident remains in critical condition.

According to investigators, the 69-year-old man was the son-in-law of the 76-year-old man.

Turner said she's only had pleasant interactions with the resident.

"You don't know people. You don't. You just don't know what's in another person's head," said Turner.

The crime scene unit and detectives spent hours collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
