2 children die from injuries sustained in house fire

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Two children who were critically injured in a deadly house fire in July died from their injuries over the weekend.

The young boy and girl, both 7 years old, were pulled from the burning home on Sterling Street in the city's Mayfair section on July 23. An adult female was killed in the fire.

According to a law enforcement source, the two children safely got out of the house, but they became scared when a family member ran back in to get the other adults, and they chased him into the burning home.

On Friday, people left balloons in front of the home in memory of the children.

"They're just too small, they don't deserve to die like that," said Victoria Gonzalez, who lives a few doors down from the fire.

On Friday, firefighters were back in the neighborhood hoping to prevent another tragedy. Officials said there were no working smoke detectors in the home where the three were killed, so they distributed free detectors to anyone who needed them.

"The only fire detector we had was expired since 2007," said Edzanardie Content, who lives near the fire.

Crews installed seven new smoke detectors in her home.

"They just wanted to make sure something to at least help us prevent that from happening again," said Content.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but sources say investigators are focused on an air conditioning unit.
