Deadly crash in North Philadelphia caught on video

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One woman was killed, and another was critically injured after a red SUV slammed into a minivan stopped at a red light early Tuesday in North Philadelphia, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. at the intersection of North Front Street and Indiana Avenue.

Dramatic surveillance video shows a minivan waiting at the light when a red SUV carrying two women struck it from behind at a high rate of speed.

"It looked like she was doing a hundred," said Jennifer Lopez, who lives nearby.

She heard the crash and immediately called 911 after seeing people trapped inside the vehicles.

"We tried to come to this car and see if there was people inside, but the car was smoking. I thought it was going to blow up," Lopez said.

Video from another angle shows the SUV knocking down a utility pole before crashing into a cement wall. Firefighters used the jaws of life to try to free the two women trapped inside the SUV.

Police said one of the women later died from her injuries. The other woman remains in critical condition. The man inside the minivan was listed in stable condition.

"It was really, really horrible," Lopez said.

Police have not released information about how fast the SUV was traveling in the 25-mile-per-hour zone. Neighbors told Action News the stretch of road is dangerous. Lopez said her own car was struck in a hit-and-run crash there just last week.

"I hope after this, they put some speed bumps or something here. To be able to help the people in the community," Lopez said.

No identities have been released.
