Neighborhood video leads to arrest in crash that hurt 71-year-old woman in Warrington Twp.

WARRINGTON, Pa. (WPVI) -- Police in Warrington say surveillance video from neighbors helped officers make an arrest in connection with a crash that left a 71-year-old woman in critical condition.

Authorities initially believed they were responding to a report of a person who had fallen along the 600 block of Addison Way on Monday morning. But detectives later received home security footage showing a blue Toyota reversing out of a driveway at high speed and striking the woman during her daily walk around 9 a.m.

Warrington Police Chief Daniel J. Friel said the footage was crucial to the investigation.

"The video did save us here," he said.

According to Friel, the impact threw the woman "about 6 to 8 feet in the air," and the driver briefly got out, looked at her, then returned to his vehicle and drove back up the driveway. The victim suffered severe injuries and was bleeding from her head.

Neighbors described the incident as shocking.

"We were very shocked and other neighbors were shaken up that this could happen here," said Kirtan Patel.

Police say the driver, identified as 60-year-old Anwar Hussain, parked his car and then ran back to the scene holding his cell phone.

A neighbor, Priya, said she asked whether he had called 911.

"I saw he had a phone in his hand, so I said, ' Did you call 911. Do you need me to call?' He said, 'You call 911.' So I called and basically took over from there," she said. "It was upsetting because she was clearly in a lot of pain."

First responders took the victim to a trauma center while officers questioned residents, including Hussain.

"They're asking, 'Did anyone see what happened or how this happened?' And nothing was said. He remained silent," Friel said.

Police say Hussain later drove the vehicle to his workplace in Philadelphia. About 45 minutes after the scene cleared, neighbors sent detectives the surveillance videos that revealed the crash.

Patel called the situation "kind of negligence," adding, "he might be scared, but still you should call for help or say sorry I hit her. It's very disturbing."

Priya said she was "furious" and "disgusted."

"I'm just glad that the detectives and the police are able to do the right thing and had the video footage and enough information to arrest him," she said.

Friel said the crash did not appear intentional.

"We don't think this was a on-purpose thing; accidents happen, but there are consequences when you don't report these accidents."

Hussain is now facing felony charges and is out on unsecured bail.

Police say they do not consider him a flight risk.

Action News knocked on his door, but no one answered.

Neighbors say they are hopeful the victim will recover.

"Hopefully, she'll be back on her feet and going for a walk within a couple of weeks," Patel said.
