2026 Atlantic Hurricane season has officially begun

Monday marked the official start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane season.

Forecasters are expecting a below-average year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting eight to 14 named storms through November 30.

Three to six of those could become hurricanes, including up to three reaching category three or stronger.

You can thank El Niño for the forecasted reprieve. The natural weather pattern produces winds that make it more difficult for hurricanes to organize.

The peak of hurricane season typically arrives in September, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

The National Hurricane Center says no tropical development is expected in the Atlantic in the coming days.
