PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Consumers' Checkbook is out with its list of 65 things most people probably shouldn't pay for.
"A lot of these items are marketed very successfully, and they seem like good deals. They seem like beneficial purchases or services, but in fact, they're not-for most of us," said Kevin Brasler, executive editor of Consumers' Checkbook.
No. 1: Add-on protection plans for flights, furniture, rental cars, and carpets.
"They're very profitable for the stores, retailers, and websites that sell these plans, but in the long run, for most consumers, they're really bad deals," Brasler said.
The same goes for home and car repair warranties and extended product warranties. These often include numerous exclusions in the fine print, and many consumers struggle to get companies to honor their claims.
Brasler also says many nutritional supplements can be a waste of money.
Also on the list: internet modem and router rentals. Instead of paying your cable company or internet provider a monthly rental fee, buy your own for less than $100.
Consumers' Checkbook also advises against signing up for regular air duct cleanings.
"For most homeowners, the service is just not needed," Brasler said.
Brasler also recommends making it a rule to never pay ATM fees. "Find a different ATM instead," he said.
Never buy bottled water-bring your own bottle and fill it up for free.
And instead of paying for identity theft and credit monitoring, go to AnnualCreditReport.com and request a credit report from each of the three credit bureaus. You can get them weekly for free.
