MOUNT LAUREL, New Jersey (WPVI) -- Come explore the Alice Paul Center for Gender Justice on Saturday, August 23 from noon to 4 pm.
"Join us for Women's Equality Day, where we will celebrate women obtaining the right to vote," says Rachael Glashan Rupisan, Executive Director of the Alice Paul Center for Gender Justice.
Tours of Alice's childhood home, known as Paulsdale, offer insight into her origin story. Alice Paul was born in 1885 in Paulsdale.
"She was a Hicksite Quaker," says Glashan Rupisan. "They believed that all people, regardless of age, race, gender, should be treated equally and fairly, which is something that Alice really took to heart."
Paul became a feminist, political strategist and suffragist.
"She really helped push the 19th Amendment forward, which gave most women the right to vote in 1920," she says.
Paul also went on to co-author the Equal Right Amendment, which she introduced to Congress in 1923 with the National Woman's Party.
The festival will be held on the lawn with more than 50 women-owned vendors.
"We have folks that sell art. We have folks that are tabling about the important work that they're doing in the community," she says. "We also have food trucks, a beer garden."
Volunteers are needed for this free event that covers the six-and-a-half-acre property.
There's lots of activities for kids that families can participate in, and there's also a suffrage parade.
You can also walk the Women's Heritage Trail, complete with audio tour.
"Our goal here is to inspire folks to pay attention to what's happening civically," says Glashan Rupisan. "So that together we can effect positive change for our communities."
