SWARTHMORE, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Get ready to feel a whirlwind of emotions in Jason Robert Brown's "Songs for a New World."
The score varies a lot stylistically with Brown including some beautiful romantic duets, along with some hilarious comedic numbers.
The musical is co-directed by Josh Hitchens and Ryan Walter.
"Here at Players Club of Swarthmore, we are dedicated to passion, commitment, and service, celebrating the diversity of our community," says Hitchens.
The show, staged upstairs in the black box space at the Players Club of Swarthmore, focuses on four people.
"Four people who were all at different various low points in their lives. They're all searching for something," he says.
This production is set in a peer support group, led by 'The Facilitator'.
"The facilitator is a person who has really found themselves like in this mission of being, you know, a quasi-leader for this group, helping people work through their issues and their past trauma," he says.
Two of the people in the group are a couple who became estranged after losing a child. Shawn Evan Weaver plays the role of 'The Running Man'.
"He's very afraid of committing to things, doesn't really want to express how he's feeling," says Weaver.
Courtney Bundens plays his counterpart, 'The Woman Left Behind'.
"And she is a very strong-willed woman," says Bundens.
The character dubbed 'The Actress' has had three very disastrous relationships.
"And over time has kind of lost her sense of herself, and lost her sense of what she's dreaming of, and is trying to find her way back to that," says Hitchens.
Each character tells their story through song with the music director, Jeff Smith, conducting a five-piece orchestra while simultaneously playing the piano.
"Some very catchy songs, but there's also a lot of very heartfelt moments," says Weaver.
"By finding community together, and through the songs that they sing, they work through the struggles that they're having and find hope for a better world, a better future for themselves," says Hitchens.
