Arrest made in decades-old cold case murder of 2-year-old Reading boy

READING, Pa. (WPVI) -- An arrest has been made in a decades-old cold case murder of a 2-year-old boy in Reading, Pennsylvania.

The girlfriend of the child's father is now facing murder charges.

Police responded to the 1000 block of Frankling Street on January 8, 1993.

A 2-year-old boy was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The initial investigation determined that the boy suffered from multiple blunt impact injuries to the head. He also had multiple bruises at various stages of healing.

His death was ruled a homicide.

At the time of his death, the child was living with his father and his father's girlfriend, Sandra Guadalupe-Castro, according to police.

Despite numerous interviews, police said they were not able to make an arrest in the case at the time.

Then, in 2005, the case was reopened under Berks County District Attorney John Adams' Cold Case Initiative.

Investigators reinterviewed numerous people, as well as "methodically" re-examined medical records and forensic findings.

Through this, they were able to determine that the boy's fatal injuries were inflicted shortly before his death, narrowing the timeline in their case.

Investigators said they were able to establish that the child was in the sole care and supervision of Guadalupe-Castro on the day of this death.

Guadalupe-Castro was arrested and charged on Tuesday. She is facing first and third degree murder.
