DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A driver has been charged in connection with a fatal accident involving a bicyclist on Monday night in Deptford Township, Gloucester County.
Iqrar Ahmad, 18, of Deptford, is charged with one count of second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. on the 1700 block of Delsea Drive near Brenner Avenue.
Police say another driver had called to report striking the bicyclist with their vehicle. The bicyclist fell into the roadway and was struck by a second vehicle.
The second vehicle continued north on Delsea Drive, investigators say, and a witness reported the driver briefly stopping before leaving the area.
Ahmad returned to the scene about two hours later, investigators say, and allegedly told police he was the driver of the second vehicle.
According to the prosecutor's office, Ahmad allegedly told police he saw a bicycle and another vehicle in the roadway and, while driving through the area, felt his vehicle strike an object.
Prosecutors say Ahmad told police he thought he struck a rock or another large object and continued driving. He later pulled over and saw damage to the lower grille of his vehicle, he allegedly told police, but still did not realize what he had struck.
He told officers he returned home and, after speaking with a family member, came back to the scene, the prosecutor's office said.
Ahmad faces up to 10 years in state prison if convicted.
