Bodycam video released after man fatally shot by cop in Delaware County; DA says officer 'justified'

MEDIA, Pa. (WPVI) -- A Delaware County police officer was justified in fatally shooting a 23-year-old man after he allegedly pulled a knife and lunged at her during a service call in Aldan on Aug. 6, the district attorney said Friday.

The D.A. also released body cam video from the shooting.

Authorities said the incident began when the man, identified as Ugochukwu Ilodigew, requested a courtesy ride provided by Aldan police.

Investigators said the encounter escalated within seconds of the officer arriving on scene.

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said the officer acted appropriately under the circumstances.

"I can't think of a thing in the world she could have done differently," Rouse said.

Investigators said that about 10 seconds after the officer arrived, Ilodigew pulled a knife. Over the next minute, the officer deployed her Taser four times while repeatedly ordering him to comply.

"Hands behind your back," the officer can be heard saying in body-camera video reviewed by investigators.

Authorities said Ilodigew repeatedly reached toward his waist. At one point during the encounter, he stated, "I have a gun and knife right here."

According to investigators, after being tased a fourth time, Ilodigew stood up, removed the Taser probes from his chest and lunged at the officer.

The officer then drew her firearm and fired twice. Ilodigew fell to the ground and later died.

The officer, whom authorities have not identified, was immediately placed on administrative leave while investigators reviewed her actions and the available video evidence.

Following that review, the district attorney's office concluded the shooting was justified.

"The officer's actions were justified that night. Not just legally, but as a person," Rouse said.

Investigators said Ilodigew was known to have experienced mental health issues and had recently received treatment, but authorities said they do not know what triggered the incident.

Rouse said the case highlights broader concerns about mental health care.

"Something has gone horribly wrong. Our mental health systems are not good enough," he said.

The family has been contacted for comment but has not responded. Authorities said the officer is taking time to recover before returning to duty.
