Car slams into Mount Laurel, NJ home after driver suffers medical emergency

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (WPVI) -- A car crashed through the side of a condo in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, on Thursday morning after the driver suffered a medical emergency.

"Basically, I heard a loud 'boom' smash. And I was like, 'That didn't sound right,'" said Nadirah Hawkins.

In fact, that "boom" at 1:49 a.m. was a sedan that had crashed into a house on the 3600 block of Saxony Drive.

Nadirah Hawkins, a neighbor, went into action.

"I immediately started knocking on the neighbor's door and no one's answering. There's four doors and I start knocking on each one," she said.

As the 56-year-old driver exited the vehicle, neighbors came out too, but the couple inside the damaged home still hadn't emerged.

"Finally, the elderly couple, the woman answers the door she comes out she doesn't really know what's going on at that point. They tell her she has to come out, there's a smell of gas," said Hawkins.

That threat had neighbors evacuated for a time.

"I saw a bunch of wires out of the ground, and I smelled the smoke, the gas as well. I wasn't really sure if that's what was coming out of the ground. But that was my alarm- I smelled gas and I wanted to make sure they got awoken so they could come out," said Hawkins, "They're a sweet couple so we look after them."

Mount Laurel police believe the driver suffered a medical issue at the time of the accident. The driver and the occupants of the home were uninjured in the crash.

"I went around the block thanking God nobody was hurt," said Hawkins.

Police are not pursuing charges against the driver. The homeowners are okay and relocation services were provided for two units affected by the crash.
