EAST KENSINGTON (WPVI) -- At Casa Borinqueña, Chef Lulu Nau and her son, Wenlock, want you to feel like you're in Puerto Rico, with bright colors on the walls that evoke Old San Juan and island vibes.
On the plate, you'll find favorites like mofongo cups, pasteles, and pastelillos, made vegan.
The most popular, by far, is the the Pincho plate-barbecue "chick'n" skewers with arroz con gandules, sweet plantains and a salad.
Wenlock is a baker who makes everything from shortbread cookies to pineapple upside down cake and even a vegan Tres Leches made with coconut milk and the traditional holiday coquito flavoring, minus the rum.
They serve what they call the cheapest coffee in the neighborhood at $2/cup.
But they also support Puerto Rican farmers with Hacienda Tres Ángeles, a coffee shipped from the island, where every bean is picked by hand.
With Casa Borinqueña, the Nau family is celebrating the history of the island while also writing their own next chapter, and they say they want customers to feel like they're at home, eating a home-cooked meal that happens to be vegan.
