Major snow removal operation shuts down streets around City Hall

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Streets Department closed several roads around City Hall on Tuesday evening for a major snow removal operation.

Penn Square around City Hall and nearby streets were closed from 4 p.m. Tuesday to midnight.

This closure included the following:

  • Penn Square around City Hall

  • North Broad Street from Arch Street to City Hall

  • South Broad Street from Chestnut Street to City Hall

  • 15th Street from Arch Street to Chestnut Street

  • JFK Boulevard from Filbert Street to 16th Street

  • East Market Street from 13th Street to City Hall

  • West Market Street from 16th Street to City Hall

Officials say the operation involved dozens of vehicles, including excavators and loaders, to quickly remove tons of snow.

Crews used the same snow removal operation in North Philadelphia along Girard Avenue and nearby neighborhoods, officials added.

Across other parts of the city, some residents are still waiting to see the first plow.

"They're side streets, you know, that's the way it always is," said Bridesburg resident Joe Lange.

Action News found several snow-covered roads in the neighborhood, where some residents shoveled their vehicles out in groups while others resigned themselves to being stuck.

City Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi said crews are working to reach those smaller roads, using smaller excavators to navigate tight blocks.

Alexander Alivini continues to face the snow struggles in South Philadelphia.

"I thought they would have done a little more salting, a little more plowing," said Alivini.

Alvini's car is just one of many getting stuck in the piles of snow on Tasker Street. "The last two days I had to call out of work because I couldn't get in," he said.

John Evans feels his pain. He also says it's difficult to navigate the streets of Tioga-Nicetown.

"This is a like a little ludicrous," said Evans. "The city says they're doing, but as we can see with our own eyes, it's just too much snow."

City leaders say crews are working nonstop to remove the snow as quickly as possible.

Residents are urged to report snow-covered streets and sidewalks to 311.
