WILMINGTON, Del (WPVI) -- A youth football game turned tragic Sunday afternoon when a gunman opened fire at Eden Park in Wilmington, Delaware, killing a father who was watching his son play.

The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. during halftime of a game between the visiting Upland Hurricanes and the New Castle Jaguars.

Coaches Tehran Freeman and Skip Burton were among the hundreds of spectators present when the shots rang out.

"I'm at a loss for words. I don't know. I'm confused myself right now," Freeman said.

Burton described the moment the gunfire began: "During the halftime speech, that's when I heard the shots ring out. And we just dove on the ground as usual...the proper procedures."

Police say the gunman targeted Lamar Massas, 36, who was attending the game to watch his son. Witnesses said panic quickly spread across the field.

"They're jumping over fences towards us and that's when I got, 'Oh, it's real' and it's not just firing shots in the air or fireworks," Burton said.

Massas' family confirmed he was a father of six. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.

Freeman and Burton emphasized the importance of youth sports as a safe space for children in communities affected by violence.

"For us, weekends is family and football. It's our safe haven, it's where you leave your guard down. It's just sad that something like that happened at a youth football game," Freeman said.

No other injuries were reported, but the emotional impact remains. Coaches are working to support their players in the aftermath.

"We have someone who is offering counseling for the kids and we're going to try and offer some of that tonight," Burton said.

Wilmington police have not commented publicly. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
