Officials are also trying to manage a water main break on the same block
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Two children are in critical condition after flames ripped through a home in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night. An adult was also injured in the blaze.
Firefighters responded just before 10 p.m. to the unit block of South 55th Street, where witnesses reported heavy flames coming from the first floor of a home.
Residents on the block said they heard a woman screaming from a second-floor window that her child was trapped inside.
The child was rescued and taken to an area hospital in stable condition.
Officials say an adult and another child were also taken to the hospital.
A Philadelphia Water Department crew is also responding to a possible water main break at S. 55th and Ludlow streets, half a block from where to fire occurred.
The call was received at around 3 AM about water flooding into the street.
Right now, the crew is removing manhole covers in an attempt to shut off the water as it continues to spew through cracks in the street and sidewalk.
Action News has been told another crew will return later Thursday morning to begin digging to determine where the break occurred.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
