More than 1/3 short-term rentals in Philadelphia operating with invalid licenses, report shows

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia's controller is calling for tougher oversight of short-term rental properties, like Airbnb and VRBO.

According to a new report, more than a third of Philadelphia short-term rental licenses were invalid.

The audit recommends more inspections and the creation of a centralized application and renewal system through its current zoning and permitting platform.

The city expects 17,000 guests to book 126,000 room nights in Greater Philadelphia via Airbnb during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
