Dead dog found abandoned on side of NJ bridge prompts investigation

HAMILTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police in Hamilton Township are investigating after officers responded to a report of a dead dog abandoned on the side of a bridge near Second Avenue and Assunpink Boulevard on Monday.

Jack Loncosky, who lives just feet from where the dog was found, said the discovery was disturbing.

"It's terrible," he said. "I don't know why they would abandon it like that. Wrap it up and just throw it away like that."

Police said the large brown dog, believed to be a pit bull, had no collar when officers arrived around noon.

"The dog was discovered with what appeared to be a green tarp partially covering it," according to an official with Hamilton police. "We don't know if the dog was wrapped in it or if it was placed over the dog. It is unknown who put the tarp there or how it ended up there but that is all part of the ongoing investigation."

"As far as the evidence, the area where the dog was located had debris there. It may not be related, but as Det. Schulte continues his investigation we're hoping it reveals something," the official added.

Hamilton Township Animal Control responded to remove the dog from the scene.

"I hope people treat animals better than what they do because they're the most forgiving animal. Man's best friend, you know?" said Loncosky.

Investigators said they recovered items at the scene that may serve as evidence and could help identify those involved.

Thomas Coleman, another nearby resident, said he feels bad for the animals.

Coleman added that this is not the first time a dog has been left in the area.

"In the last year, we had to take one animal to the shelter around 2 a.m. He was just wandering. He wouldn't come off our porch. He was on our porch banging, knocking, scratching. Luckily, we were able to help him out."

As Hamilton police, township animal control and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office investigate, some residents say they want to see cameras installed and more patrols.

"They do police the area somewhat, but this seems like a high area where, a lot of times, I'm looking out my window, and I'm wondering why is that car parked there?" Coleman said.
