Family mourns bystander killed in South Philly shooting

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- New details are emerging about a double shooting in South Philadelphia that left one man dead and critically wounded another.

A memorial was set up Thursday for 35-year-old Wayne Jones, a victim of a wild shooting spree a night earlier on the 600 block of Winton Street.

Jones of West Philadelphia was visiting friends when he was shot in the head.

Early reports said he appeared to have been targeted, but now police agree with family friends who say that's not so.

"[The target] wasn't Wayne," family friend Rose Wallace said.

56-year-old Craig Washington was also shot.

The Navy veteran who has worked for SEPTA for 31 years was also caught in the hail of bullets that hit cars and bounced off houses.

"He's just very lucky by the grace of God. He was just walking up the street and gunfire erupted," Craig's brother Greg Washington said.

"I hope they find the suspect and arrest him," Craig's sister Marion Washington said.

The Washington siblings grew up on the block, but they and others say there has been an influx of young people who loiter, have guns, and attitudes.

"No respect for most of us who have lived here. We have been here all our lives. Now, we're ducking and dodging. You're scared to go around the corner," Craig's sister Charlene Washington said.

"There's a bunch of young, little dumb kids shooting people and a lot of innocent people are getting hurt," Wallace said.

Craig Washington remains in critical condition.
