Google Maps rolls out major AI upgrade

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Google Maps has launched its biggest update in a decade, introducing an AI-powered overhaul that allows users to ask complex, conversational questions the platform could not previously answer, including requests such as "find a public tennis court with lights for playing at night."

The company says the new capabilities draw on information from millions of reviews and websites, with results that include photos, ratings and other visual details.

Google describes the combination of maps data and artificial intelligence as a significant shift in how people can plan and navigate in the real world.

"It is personalized to you -- so based on your activity in Maps, the prior searches you may have done," said Miriam Daniel, the vice president and GM of Google Maps. "Maps is what you use when you want to go out in the physical world so you can turn those plans into actions instantly."

Google says directions will now sound more natural and highlight on-map details more fluidly. The update also makes it easier to find alternate routes when traffic issues arise.

The new features were rolled out on Thursday.
