Man shot outside University City theater after argument

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times outside the CineMark Theater in University City late Tuesday night following an argument, according to Philadelphia police.

The incident began around 10 p.m. inside the theater, where witnesses reported hearing two men arguing.

"Witnesses heard people arguing. Some heard one of the two males arguing say, 'Let's take this outside.' And immediately upon taking it outside, shots were heard," said Capt. James Kearney of the Philadelphia Police Department's Shooting Investigation Group.

Responding officers found the victim with gunshot wounds to the arm and abdomen. He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Police have not released an update on his condition.

Kearney said investigators are pursuing strong leads but are asking for the public's help.

"We are asking for the help to see if anybody has cell phone video, or any type of video, it would help us catch the shooter in this instance," he said.

The shooting occurred near the University of Pennsylvania campus. Despite the proximity, some students said they are not overly concerned about safety in the area.

"There's like an occasional shooting in the area, but for it to happen in University City is honestly pretty rare," said Kevin Sung, a Penn student.

"It doesn't feel like it's going to be a very common thing. And the school does a really good job of providing safety resources. So, I never feel truly unsafe around campus," said another student, Andrew Zheng.

Investigators have not announced any arrests. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
