MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- This local family has made it their mission to show how much of a hero their son was to them.
It's with the "John Shapiro's Superheroes" foundation, named after a young boy who passed away in 2011 to brain cancer.
The "heroes" symbolism comes from Shapiro's ability to help others and inspire his peers even at a young age.
To honor his memory, each year a 5k is held to fundraise for community members.
The organization then donates the funds to families fighting cancer.
They simply provide them with the financial assistance that families can utilize however they see fit.
This 5k has been ongoing for over a decade and happens every June.
