The Music Man brings Broadway classic to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- It's a Broadway classic that's captivated audiences for almost 70 years.

This weekend, Meredith Willson's six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy, The Music Man, is coming to the Playhouse on Rodney Square in Wilmington.

It's a show that has sold out Broadway venues and stages across the world and is still being produced in community theaters and schools everywhere.

And this weekend only, you can relive the magic with a brand-new touring production that's being called "grand and glorious."

"It's like a perfect golden age musical, but for the modern times," says Elizabeth D'Aiuto, who plays Marion Paroo.

"It's just so iconic, too, the music and the book," says D'Aiuto. "We have a really beautiful production. It's like this little jewel box of a musical with our set, our lighting, our costumes, the choreography."

The Music Man tells the story of conman Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer in a small Iowa town.

Before he skips town with their money, he falls in love with the local librarian, Marian.

"Because of what he does to the town, because of how people who were enemies are now friends, and the kids are singing and dancing on the street, she sees what he does," D'Aiuto says. "And, through all of that, they fall in love."

The soundtrack also features some of Broadway's biggest hits.

"The music is still great," says D'Aiuto. "To get to sing it every single night is absolutely, like, a dream come true."

After almost 70 years, the iconic musical is still making its mark.

"Not only is it a love story, but it's also just about community love and sharing," says D'Aiuto. "That's what I feel like the world needs right now, a story like this."
