Trailer drops for Nat Geo documentary 'Time and Water'

The glacier ice has a story to tell in the upcoming documentary "Time and Water," coming to theaters at the end of May.

National Geographic Documentary Films released the trailer for a new film from award-winning director Sara Dosa. "Time and Water" follows renowned Icelandic poet and author Andri Snr Magnason as he pieces together his own life experiences, the archival memories of his family and the tales of his homeland's melting glaciers into a time capsule for the future. As the land around him goes through unprecedented changes, it's his way of preserving everything dear to him, from his personal memories to his culture's traditional songs and folklore.

"When speaking about the climate crisis, a scientist once said to me: 'People don't understand data, they understand stories,'" said Magnason. "The film is a love letter to glaciers and generations, an invitation to us all to consider how we listen to the world as it changes around us."

Magnason is an Icelandic writer and documentary film director. He has written poetry, fiction, plays, nonfiction and science fiction that have received multiple international accolades. His book "On Time and Water" has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Dosa's previous feature documentary with National Geographic, "Fire of Love" featuring the married volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice Krafft, was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, and won her the Directors' Guild of America Award for Best Directing for a Documentary Feature. This time around, Dosa trades the backdrop of fiery eruptions for the slow flow of Iceland's glacier melt.

"'Time and Water' weaves a story of family and our natural landscapes as an effort to make sense of our profoundly changing world," said Dosa. "We were inspired by how memory is carried across time, through family archives and cultural myths, in the land and the ice itself. Our film reveals how human life is inseparable from nature, bringing the distant future into intimate focus and inviting audiences to imagine, act and feel a love for a world beyond their own lifetimes."

The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, as well as the Margaret Mead Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. Upcoming festival screenings include Millennium Docs Against Gravity and Sheffield DocFest, before heading into an international theatrical release.

"'Time and Water' is a deeply moving and timely cri de coeur that invites audiences to reflect on the ties that bind us to the natural world and to each other," Carolyn Bernstein, EVP of National Geographic Documentary Films, said. "As with 'Fire of Love,' Sara and her team's unique creative vision and spirit of collaboration bring emotional depth, dramatic urgency and spectacular cinematography to a story that speaks to generations past, present and future."

"Time and Water" comes to theaters globally on May 29, and will air on National Geographic and stream on Disney+ later this year.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of National Geographic and this ABC station.
