Off-duty Philadelphia officer identified as suspect in Northampton County homicide

ALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police have confirmed that an off-duty officer is the suspect in a homicide under investigation in Northampton County.

The shooting happened shortly before 2 p.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Old Gate Road in Allen Township.

Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were called to a home for a reported domestic incident. At the scene, they found a 27-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds and were told the suspected shooter had fled.

Authorities said troopers later located the suspect's vehicle in nearby Hanover Township. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly sped away.

According to investigators, the suspect eventually returned to the scene, where troopers took him into custody.

We're told charges are pending by the Northampton County District Attorney's Office.

Philadelphia police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Officer Kenroy Cummings.

The department says the internal affairs bureau is conducting an administrative investigation, but directed questions about the shooting to state police.

Authorities have not confirmed how the suspect and the victim knew each other or whether they were related.

The Lehigh County Coroner's office says out of respect for the family's privacy, the victim's identity will not be released until after the autopsy. That is scheduled for Monday.
