NORTH COVENTRY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Radio transmissions from North Coventry Police officers are providing more details about what led up to a police-involved shooting Monday evening in Chester County.

The incident began when officers were called to the scene at the Lowe's in Town Square Plaza off Pottstown Pike just before 6:30 p.m.

They were allegedly searching for someone originally wanted for retail theft.

The threat level seems to increase as police radio back to dispatch while a foot chase ensues.

"When I was chasing him through the woods, the suspect said he'll shoot me, but I didn't see anything in his hands," an officer can be heard saying.

About 30 minutes later, the man apparently got inside a police vehicle in the area of Kline and Lindberg avenues.

A source told Action News that an officer with the North Coventry Police Department fired their service weapon, striking the man in the chest.

The man was taken to an area hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Police sources identified the man as 40-year-old Joshua McFadden.

Neighbors describe seeing a man running through their yards ahead of the shooting.

"What stuck in my mind is he had on pink sneakers," said Linda Piotti of North Coventry Township. "And he came up the street rushing, and instead of going around the street, he cut across the yard."

Pat, who asked to be identified only by her first name, said she was stunned when the man suddenly appeared in her kitchen.

"There's a man in my house and I didn't invite him in. He just came," she said.

"All of a sudden, my door opened, and he was in my kitchen down on the floor," she added. "He looked like he was going to die. He said, 'I need water, I need water.'"

Pat said she allowed him to rest, call his wife and drink water. She then texted her grandson, who came over and forced the man to leave.

Moments later, just up the street, McFadden apparently jumped inside a police vehicle.

No officers were injured in the shooting incident.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available," said the Chester County DA's Office in a statement.
