NORTH COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- A woman says a wanted man hid inside her home in North Coventry Township for roughly 40 minutes after barging through her back door during a police chase Monday night.
Pat, who asked to be identified only by her first name, said she was stunned when the man suddenly appeared in her kitchen.
"There's a man in my house and I didn't invite him in. He just came," she said.
Police say the chase ended with officers shooting the suspect, identified by police sources as 40-year-old Joshua McFadden. But before that confrontation, Pat says McFadden entered her home asking for help.
"All of a sudden, my door opened, and he was in my kitchen down on the floor," she said. "He looked like he was going to die. He said, 'I need water, I need water.'"
Pat said she allowed him to rest, call his wife and drink water. She then texted her grandson, who came over and forced the man to leave.
Moments later, just up the street, McFadden apparently jumped inside a police vehicle.
According to police radio transmissions, officers first encountered McFadden earlier in the evening at the Lowe's in Town Square Plaza off Pottstown Pike while searching for a suspect wanted for retail theft.
Officers reported that the man crashed a car and ran away, starting a foot chase.
As the pursuit continued, officers' concerns grew. You can hear them detail the threats on police radio.
"When I was chasing him through the woods, the suspect said he'll shoot me, but I didn't see anything in his hands," one officer said.
Pat said McFadden never acted violently toward her and refused her attempts to call 911.
"I didn't really feel I was in danger of being hurt. He never tried to touch me or come near me in an aggressive sort of way," she said. "It's kind of weird, in a nice community, what could happen."
The Chester County District Attorney's Office is now leading the investigation.
McFadden was alive at last check after being shot by police. No officers were hurt.
