Philadelphia launches summer voter outreach series to boost registration and election awareness

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia city officials are taking voter registration efforts directly into neighborhoods this summer through a new outreach series aimed at increasing voter participation and addressing common misconceptions about the election process.

Rather than waiting until election season approaches, the city is hosting community-focused events where residents can register to vote, apply for mail-in ballots and get answers to election-related questions.

"Far too often, it seems like we wait until the last minute, we wait until two weeks before election, about to start talking about elections, what's your plan to vote?" Omar Sabir said.

The city's summer outreach series launches this week at several satellite election offices.

Officials said the events are designed to make election services more accessible while engaging with residents in their neighborhoods.

According to the City Commissioner's Office, about 1.1 million adults in Philadelphia are eligible to vote, but roughly 65,000 are not registered.

Officials hope events like the summer outreach series will help reduce that gap.

The campaign also focuses on correcting misinformation about voting requirements.

"Some people still think that they have to bring passports and all this other kind of stuff for elections, and we gotta let you know that you can still vote the same exact way how you always been voting," Sabir said.

In addition to voter registration and education efforts, the city is encouraging residents to become poll workers ahead of the next election.

Election staffing typically reaches about 10,000 workers, but officials said they usually secure approximately 8,400.

The first Summer Voter Engagement Series event is scheduled for Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the 4th Council District satellite election office on Lancaster Avenue.
