Philadelphia officials say plans are in place for July 4 crowds and extreme heat

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- City officials say they are prepared for large crowds and extreme heat conditions as Philadelphia gets ready for its Fourth of July celebrations and events tied to the nation's 250th anniversary.

The transformation of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway is nearly complete, with a massive stage being built on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the semiquincentennial celebrations.

Officials gathered at the site Wednesday and said preparations have focused on two major challenges: managing hundreds of thousands of visitors and addressing potentially dangerous heat.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said the city is prepared to host a significant national celebration.

"As the birthplace of American democracy, Philly deserved a July 4th celebration worthy of America's 250th birthday," Parker said.

Emergency management officials said planning for heat-related risks has been underway for years.

"We have been preparing for this risk. This is a risk we knew three years ago when we got this event scheduled for July," said Dominick Morales of the Office of Emergency Management.

To help attendees cope with high temperatures, officials said water stations, misting fans and cooling stations will be available throughout the event area.

The Office of Emergency Management has been activated for the past 21 days due to the World Cup and FIFA Fan Fest, and will remain activated for at least two more weeks as the city also prepares for Fourth of July festivities and the MLB All-Star Game.

Security measures will remain heightened throughout the celebrations.

"We are ready. You will see us out there in force. We prepare for any occurrence. There will be things you see, there will be a number of assets you don't see," Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.

Officials said law enforcement agencies from neighboring counties will assist Philadelphia police. About 300 Pennsylvania State Police troopers also will be deployed, in addition to support from federal partners.

Bethel urged residents and visitors to do their part to ensure the event remains safe.

"I want everyone to have a good time. Don't mess up the party," he said.

The Fourth of July event is free to attend.
