PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A state police pursuit through Center City Philadelphia late Tuesday night ended with a crash and the arrest of a man wanted on multiple warrants, authorities said.
Troopers attempted to stop a black Chevrolet Impala near 33rd and Spring Garden streets around 11:30 p.m. after observing the vehicle driving erratically, according to state police spokesperson Trooper Paul Holdefer.
"Troopers were attempting to stop a black Chevy Impala who fled from them," Holdefer said.
Police said the driver, identified as Marcus Stewart, sped away down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and then JFK Boulevard before reaching 11th Street.
"The pursuit was terminated... so the person still fleeing even though we weren't chasing him," Holdefer said.
The chase ended at 11th and Market streets when Stewart's vehicle became disabled after hitting a SEPTA bus and a parked car.
"In the act of trying to squeeze between a SEPTA bus and parked vehicle, the vehicle became disabled. And the driver was actually stuck in the vehicle," Holdefer said.
Stewart was taken into custody and later found to be wanted on six warrants from various counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, Holdefer said.
"They are from various counties throughout the Southeastern Pa. region," he said.
The 44-year-old has a history of arrests for theft and drug possession and has previously served time in prison, according to police.
Stewart remains in jail facing charges of DUI, drug possession and other offenses related to the pursuit.
