Police search for suspect in Walmart shooting that injured employee

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- Police in Delaware County are searching for a man wanted for attempted murder after a shooting inside a Walmart on Friday that left an employee injured.

Authorities on Sunday released a photo of 21-year-old Armani Tyrell Waite, who investigators say shot a woman during an argument with another man inside the store on North MacDade Boulevard.

Earlier in the day, officers attempted to execute a warrant at a home on the 5200 block of Gramercy Drive in Upper Darby Township. Video shared by a resident showed police surrounding the home with guns drawn. Sources told Action News that officers were searching for Waite but did not find him.

Police said the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Friday during a dispute between Waite and another male customer. According to investigators, Waite pulled out a gun and began firing, hitting the employee in the calf. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Sources told Action News that both Waite and the other customer involved in the altercation had guns, and that Waite dropped his weapon in the store before fleeing. Police have been searching for him since.

Neighbors on Gramercy Drive said they did not know Waite, but learning the police activity was connected to the Walmart shooting left them unsettled.

"Our neighbors here, we have a close group. And a lot of us have been here for decades. I grew up here, I've been on this street for 35 years now," said Stephen Gallo of Upper Darby Township. "I mean, it's not what it was growing up, and that kinda sucks. I mean, it is kind of terrifying. Like I love it here, always have, always will. But I just had - my son's 1, I don't plan on being in Upper Darby for the foreseeable future."

Waite's family arrived at the home while Action News was on the block. His mother said her son is working with an attorney to turn himself in to police.
