Oscar winner Brendan Fraser stars in holiday film

In theaters now, it's the latest film from Oscar winner Brendan Fraser.

"Rental Family" is about an American actor who lands an unusual gig with a Japanese agency to play stand-in roles for strangers.

Fraser says this is a film that taps into human connection, belonging, and the true meaning of family.

"Philip finds himself standing in as a long-lost father to a little girl," Fraser says, "unbeknownst to her, he's not truly her father."

Rental families have been a booming business in Japan since the 80s. There are hundreds of agencies with family and friends for hire.

"It's something that fills a need," Fraser says, "and it does a lot of good. This movie is a love letter to loneliness, and it's addressed to Tokyo."

The renter gets the relationship they seek, and the person who shows up for work finds a connection that maybe they never knew they needed.

"I think the family that we have is the one that we need," says Fraser. "It might not be your immediate family, it might be your found family, but all the same, it's the one that you need to rely on."
