Bystander doing yard work among 4 shot in Southwest Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A shooting following an altercation at a Southwest Philadelphia basketball court injured four people, including a bystander, on Monday night, according to police and witnesses.

The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. at the James Finnegan Playground. Surveillance video captured what appeared to be an altercation on the basketball court before gunfire erupted.

A witness who asked not to be identified said he believed the young men who provoked the encounter were not from the neighborhood.

"All dressed in black. Black hoodies, masks up over their nose. You can't judge nobody, but I knew they were up to something," the witness said.

Video shows at least one person opening fire. Most of those involved then ran up Harley Street, where additional shots were heard.

The witness described hearing one of the victims call for help after the shooting.

"One starts screaming, 'I'm hit. Somebody help.' His buddies went and scoop him up in a red car," he said.

Three young men, ages 18, 19 and 20, were hospitalized and remained in stable condition.

A man in his 40s who was doing yard work across the street was grazed by a bullet beneath his eye. He was treated at the scene.

The witness said incidents like this are especially difficult as community members work to create positive opportunities for children at the playground.

"We are trying to get this playground and have different events and everything for the kids, but some of them are unappreciative of what you're trying to do for them," he said.

Police are questioning several witnesses. No arrests had been made.
