3 injured in shootout after dispute over fireworks in Brewerytown

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- An investigation is underway in Philadelphia's Brewerytown neighborhood after three people were shot during a dispute that police say began over fireworks.

Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. along the 1600 block of North Newkirk Street. Investigators said a small group had begun setting off fireworks when an angry neighbor came outside and a confrontation followed.

According to police, witnesses said the neighbor pulled out a gun and opened fire. Another neighbor then came outside and returned fire.

Will Douglas, who identified himself as the brother of one of the victims, said his sister was trying to leave the area when the shooting began.

"Apparently people were arguing and she said, 'I need to get out of here' and continued to the bus stop that she was going to, and then she got hit in the leg," Douglas said.

A nearby resident who declined to be identified said the scene was chaotic.

"I heard it's screaming and everything. And then the ambulance and police. So, everything was just so confusing. I was too scared to look out of the window," the neighbor said.

Police said more than a dozen shots were fired during the exchange.

A 53-year-old man was shot in the chest, and a 23-year-old woman was shot in the back. Both victims were taken to Temple Hospital, where they remained in critical condition, according to authorities.

Douglas' 22-year-old sister was shot in the knee. He said she is expected to make a full recovery.

"Right now, I'm going to drop her clothes off and some things that she would like to wear. Some of those things," Douglas said.

Residents in the area said the shooting was frightening for those who live nearby.

"It's so scary, because we do have children out here. Granted, at that time, everyone should be in the house. But, I mean, we're in the house, anything can happen," said Angelane Lewis Watson, a neighbor.

Police said one of the men involved in the shooting is being questioned, while another remains at large. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

The investigation remains ongoing.
