EXCLUSIVE: Uber driver 'grateful to be alive' after vehicle hit by gunfire in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- An Uber driver says he is grateful to be alive after suddenly coming under gunfire seconds after he picked up passengers in Philadelphia's Holmesburg section Wednesday night.

Police said the shooting happened at around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Torresdale and Shelmire avenues.

The Uber driver, who did not want to be identified, said he was instantly confused and went into survival mode as he tried to get away.

"Grateful to be alive. I thought the passengers lit off a firework. It happened so quickly and the gunshots were very rapid," the driver said.

That's when he said he heard one of the passengers say, "I'm shot."

"One of the people in the back was like, 'I'm shot,' and I knew I was full of adrenaline and didn't know I wasn't shot and I had blood on my arm," the driver recalled.

The Uber driver said he was cut by shattered glass from the passenger window, and said he quickly looked up the nearest hospital on the GPS during the chaos.

He was able to drive to Nazareth Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia.

That's where the driver saw all of the bullets in the side of his car and said he expects to be shaken up for quite some time.

"I'm a new Uber driver and I prefer working late nights, and I think this is going to be my last night of working Uber," the driver said.

Action News has learned from police that a 34-year-old man was shot in the leg when someone fired at least 14 shots at the car. That victim is said to be in stable condition.

Detectives are working to determine what led to the shooting and who is responsible.
