WILDWOOD, N.J. (WPVI) -- Wildwood police have arrested a 67-year-old man for allegedly stealing nearly $200,000 worth of metal from the Giant Ferris Wheel refurbishment work area on Morey's Piers property.
Investigators say William Morelli of Wildwood Crest broke into the site over several days, removed the metal and sold it to a scrap yard.
The theft was reported on February 4. The stolen materials are valued at more than $175,000.
"We are heartbroken by this incident," said Geoff Rogers, Chief Operating Officer at Morey's Piers. "The Giant Wheel holds deep sentimental value for not only the company and our team members, but the generations of families who have made memories on it. While this theft has presented a challenge, it does not change our commitment to completing this project on schedule."
Following the 2025 season, crews began the refurbishment of the iconic Giant Wheel.
Morey's Piers officials say the theft is a setback to the refurbishment of the Ferris wheel, but it will return in time for the summer season.
Morelli is facing theft charges and was released on a summons.
