Woman, 67, attacked with stun gun during bus stop robbery

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 67-year-old woman was robbed and attacked with a stun gun while waiting for a bus on a cold, snowy Sunday morning a few weeks ago in Northeast Philadelphia, according to investigators.

Surveillance video shows the woman standing at a bus stop when a woman approached and attempted to steal her bag.

The victim resisted, refusing to give up her belongings. The struggle lasted more than three minutes before a second female attacker arrived, police said.

"The woman fought so hard, one of the robbers, the lady in the green Eagles jacket, had a contact-taser and tasered her during the course of the robbery to get her to release the book bag," said Capt. Jack Ryan from Northeast Detectives.

The two female attackers eventually got away with the woman's bag, which contained $500 in cash.

The victim was not seriously injured, but police said she was left stunned and shaking on the ground in the bitter cold at the corner of Castor Avenue and Benner Street.

"She laid in the street until the 59 bus came a short time later, and the bus driver from SEPTA assisted her, brought her over to the police station and made the report," Ryan said.

Using recordings from city street cameras, investigators tracked the suspects' vehicle to a nearby convenience store. Images captured there show the two suspected female attackers and their alleged getaway driver.

Neighbors in the area say incidents like this serve as a reminder that anyone can be targeted.

"It's not safe around here, you have to watch every step you take," said Eva Flores, who lives nearby.

Randy Hunter, another neighbor, expressed frustration over the attack.

"I just hope they really find the person, the jerks that did this to this woman. For you to taze a woman, like, you got to be lower than low. Like, I don't understand it," Hunter said.

Police described the suspected getaway vehicle as a maroon GMC Acadia Denali. Surveillance video was not clear enough, though, to capture the license plate number.

The Fraternal Order of Police is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
