Philadelphia police ID woman killed by alleged speeding driver while crossing street

After hitting the woman, the driver crashed into another vehicle, then fled on foot before being arrested, authorities said.

Woman fatally struck by speeding driver while crossing street: Police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A woman was killed Thursday afternoon when she was struck by a speeding hit-and-run driver while crossing the street in Philadelphia, police said.

The crash happened just before 4 p.m. along the 3500 block of Market Street in University City.

Witnesses told investigators the driver was speeding east on Market Street and driving recklessly.

Police say 41-year-old Rosa Mar Espinosa Rodas was walking north on 36th Street, crossing Market, when she was hit. She was later pronounced dead.

After striking the woman, the driver, identified as 30-year-old Shamir Miller, crashed into another vehicle at 33rd and Market streets, then fled on foot before being arrested, authorities said.

A 41-year-old woman who was in the vehicle struck by Miller was treated for neck and back injuries. She was listed as stable.

Further details about the crash have not been released.

Miller has been charged with murder, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault, and related charges.
