Police investigate death of woman found stabbed in West Philadelphia home

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating the death of a 46-year-old woman whose body was discovered Sunday inside a home in West Philadelphia.

Officers had been called to the property on the 5500 block of West Girard for a wellness check after a family member reported not seeing her for several weeks.

Detectives returned to the home Monday, appearing to ask people inside about a doorbell camera. Authorities said the victim, identified as Tyhesia Street, was found in a second-floor bedroom with multiple stab wounds to her torso.

Action News spoke with Street's family members on Monday. They say she was a kind-hearted, caring person, who would always have your back. She was a loving mother to six children and one grandchild. They have no idea how someone could do this to her.

Street's brother says he last spoke to her on March 28. The family says her husband's sister is the one who called police for a wellness check on Sunday.

Neighbors said the discovery has left them shaken.

"She was a good neighbor. Very nice lady," said Dawn Steplight. "I was shocked. That's terrible, terrible. And it frightened me because I'm so close. I can't believe this happened."

Another neighbor, Damon Jones, said, "Would've never imagined something like that would occur ever. And then for her to be missing for days and nobody noticed, none of us have noticed, it's kinda sad," he said.

Sources tell Action News someone was taken into police custody on Monday afternoon for questioning.

So far no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
