Rideshare driver shot during attempted robbery in Philadelphia's Fairmount section: Police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A rideshare driver is recovering after police say she was shot during an attempted robbery early Saturday morning in Philadelphia's Fairmount neighborhood, just blocks from the FIFA Fan Fest.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on the 2800 block of Poplar Street. According to police, the 38-year-old woman was waiting to pick up passengers when two suspects approached her vehicle.

Investigators said one of the suspects walked up to the driver's side window armed with a handgun. As the driver attempted to flee, the suspect fired a shot through the window, striking her in the left shoulder.

After being shot, police said the woman drove herself several blocks to the area of 28th and Poplar streets, where patrons at a nearby bar called 911.

"I was sitting outside," said Aklilu Senbeta, owner of Era Bar.

Senbeta said patrons at the bar rushed to help the wounded driver and contacted emergency responders.

"They came quick. They came fast," he said of the police response.

The shooting unfolded near Philadelphia's FIFA Fan Fest, which has drawn thousands of soccer fans to the city.

Wendy Cox, who lives nearby, said she heard the gunfire from her home.

"I heard what sounded like firecrackers very close to my open window," Cox said. "I didn't think anything of it and shortly thereafter the street filled with police."

She later saw fans gathered nearby as officers investigated the shooting.

"I saw some Brazilian fans with their flags draped around their shoulders across the street watching what was going on," Cox said.

Cox said she is unsettled knowing the suspects have not been caught.

"That's I think what's bothering me the most, knowing that they didn't catch them," she said. "They ran away. That's what I find most scary."

Senbeta described the neighborhood as typically peaceful.

"The neighborhood is very quiet, everybody knows each other," he said. "They watch the neighborhood."

Police said the two suspects fled in the opposite direction after the shooting. They were described as males in their late teens to early 20s wearing all-black clothing and masks.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where she was reported to be stable.

No arrests have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.
