Woman killed in Chester, Pa. hit-and-run; driver remains at large

CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- A woman is dead after a hit-and-run in the city of Chester, Pa. on Saturday night, and the driver remains at large.

The woman was struck while crossing Route 291 near Lamokin Street.

Officers were called to the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found the woman unresponsive in the roadway.

She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Police have not released her identity.

A neighbor who lives near the crash site and asked not to be identified said she witnessed the aftermath.

"It was an event you don't want to remember, because when you hear the noise, and you hear the impact, and you know it's a human being that got hit, it really hits you in a different light," she said.

Police said the vehicle involved had already left the scene when officers arrived. The striking vehicle was later located in the Woodlyn area with heavy damage and both headlights missing, according to investigators.

The neighbor added that the area can be difficult to navigate at night.

"It's a busy street. This is like a highway, so its traffic coming up and down all the time, so I understand they maybe didn't see the person - it was dark outside," she said.

Chester Councilmember Shyquan Davis offered condolences to the victim's family.

"Distraught. It's definitely a detriment to our community anytime we lose a life here," Davis said earlier, adding later, "My most sincere and deepest condolences. It's never easy to lose a loved one, especially around the holidays when it's a time for families and friends, so I just want to uplift them and the city of Chester has them in our prayers."

Police are still searching for the driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact Chester police.
