World Cup crowds continue to pack Philadelphia as FIFA Fan Festival draws thousands
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- World Cup excitement continued to surge through Philadelphia on Monday as fans arrived at the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill on its fifth day.
Fans watched on the big screens as Uruguay vs. Saudi Arabia ended in a tie.
Visitors described the festival as lively and welcoming.
"I think it's a vibe," said Aisha Folkes of Germantown.
Some attendees said they've been returning daily.
"It's the World Cup. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Rashard Gayle of Logan Square.
Others praised the atmosphere created by fans from around the world.
"The experience, the ambiance here. It's different with every fan from every country. It's just a good time here," said David Rodriguez of Fairmount.
The festival also offered activities for young athletes.
"My grandson here, he loves to play soccer," said Richard Bondurant of Media. His grandson added, "I can shoot goals."
To beat the heat, visitors cooled off at misting stations and refilled water bottles.
Popular giveaways included customizable charm bracelets, which drew long lines.
"FIFA World Cup in the city that I live in - it's really special, so I want it to be definitely Philly themed, football themed," Folkes said.
At the VISIT PA tent, fans spun a prize wheel, while others gathered in Beckham's Backyard to help create a Philadelphia-themed mural featuring the Declaration of Independence, a bald eagle, and the Liberty Bell.
"Fan Fest really has been great," said Rebecca Carleton of Bensalem. "We've had beautiful weather, food great. Vibes are great, and I love that there's so much for everyone to do."
The festival will be open on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entry requires online registration.
Organizers recommend arriving on foot, though public transit, rideshare, and prebooked parking are also available.
The next match at Lincoln Financial Field, which is being called Philadelphia Stadium during the tournament, is on Friday, where Brazil is set to face Haiti.
