CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- A rare homecoming unfolded aboard the Battleship New Jersey in Camden, as Paul Robbins, a 101-year-old World War II veteran, returned to the ship where he once served more than eight decades ago.
Robbins, one of only two surviving original crew members of the battleship, served as a gunner's mate in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946.
"This was my home for 32 months during the war," Robbins said.
On the day of his visit, Robbins was welcomed back aboard the ship with applause from attendees who gathered to witness the occasion.
Among them was Mike Spiecker of Manahawkin, New Jersey, who brought his son to experience the moment.
"To actually have a veteran from the New Jersey ship was exceptional," Spiecker said.
His 10-year-old son, Christian Spiecker, reflected on the significance of the visit.
"It's cool to see someone who really experienced that part of history. He was really here all those years ago; he served and protected our country during our time of need," he said.
Robbins marked the day wearing a t-shirt featuring a photo of himself as a teenager in 1943, when he first went to war.
Now, he stands as a living reminder of a generation that is rapidly fading. Of the roughly 16 million Americans who served in World War II, only about 45,000 remain alive.
The visit also carried a personal note of loss. Robbins shared that a close friend, Bill Ryan, had planned to attend but died weeks earlier.
"My buddy Bill Ryan was 102. He was going to be here, but he didn't make it. He passed away three weeks ago. I miss him," Robbins said.
To honor those who served and those who never returned home, Robbins participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at sea, casting it overboard as "Taps" played in tribute.
As the ceremony concluded, Robbins expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity to return.
"May the Lord bless you and keep you for another day," he said, drawing applause from those gathered.
Despite his age, Robbins remains active. He continues to drive and recently renewed his driver's license, which is valid for another five years.
